Stiliyan Petrov is back playing football with a Sunday league team

The former Aston Villa captain was forced to retire after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

FORMER ASTON VILLA captain Stiliyan Petrov is back playing football.

The 35-year old, who was forced to retire two years ago after being diagnosed with leukaemia is returning to fitness with Sunday league side Wychall Wanderers in the Central Warwickshire League.

Petrov was filmed playing 90 minutes in a 2-0 win and told the Birmingham Mail afterwards:

“It’s a good laugh and they’re competitive games. It’s just really nice to be out there playing a proper game.

‘I’ve played 90 minutes and my fitness is improving but I need to be patient.’

With his leukaemia now in remission, the former Celtic man was making his third appearance for the club.

“Everything is fine, touch wood. There are only three months to go on tablets and I’m finished. I’m on steroids until January.

‘I’ll be there again on Sunday but don’t ask me who we’re playing.”
