IRELAND BOSS Stephen Kenny praised his playersโ efforts but admitted his side werenโt quite good enough to beat the Netherlands on Saturday night in Amsterdam.
The visitors suffered a 1-0 defeat thanks to Wout Weghorstโs first-half goal, but the gap in quality was greater than the scoreline suggested.
The fact that the Dutch had 19 attempts on goal compared to Irelandโs three was perhaps a better reflection of their dominance over the 90 minutes.
โHolland are world-class and one of the top teams in Europe with players at the best clubs,โ Kenny told RTร afterwards. โWe played them twice โ there was nothing in the game in Dublin and tonight. They had a lot of chances and we relied on last-ditch defending and Gavin [Bazunu] to play well in goal.
โThe reason Ireland have never beaten a tier-one team in our history in an away game is because itโs bloody hard. Thatโs why all the great [Irish] teams havenโt managed it. When you come to places like Holland, itโs a tough game.
โI salute my players for their courage. They wanted the ball in all areas, worked their socks off and put their body on the line. We lacked a bit of creativity in the final third at times. We break the press. We get into good areas and we recycle where we need to drive or cut in and shoot, get earlier crosses in. We need to add that still against the top teams
โBut the players were very brave and played very well for long periods. Okay, we made mistakes in possession and nearly got punished, and we want to eradicate that.โ
It was then put to Kenny that he still had the backing of the players and the Irish manager responded: โI donโt think itโs just for me, itโs for the whole environment and level of professionalism with all the staff, not just a personal one for me.
โWe have rebuilt a team over the last couple of years because it was needed. The alternatives were players who moved down the divisions. There is no one that weโre overlooking. There is a massive deficit in Irish football. All of these players have been fast-tracked through.โ
Asked whether he expects his time as manager to come to an end when the FAI board meet to discuss his performance at the end of the month, Kenny acknowledged the palpable uncertainty surrounding his future in the job.
โI really donโt know. I donโt control that. Itโs quite possible. I donโt know. But all I can say is I see the effort tonight and the high level of skill, and bravery. It wasnโt enough. Holland were better than us. Whatโs the alternative? Defend deep and try and see it out? They will break you down anyway.โ
He continued: โAll of these players, bar one or two, the best years are ahead of them. Weโve blooded them early, thatโs really enhanced their careers. With a lot of them, their international performances have helped them get their move in their club careers in a major way โ thatโs eight or nine players. Iโm not talking about one or two. Itโs helped them. Now, we need to get better.โ
The Dutch loss was the culmination of Irelandโs worst-performing qualifying campaign since Euro โ72, with just two wins and six losses.
Nevertheless, Irish captain for the night Matt Doherty backed Kenny and his staff to continue in the job.
Asked about the possibility of it being the managerโs last competitive game in charge, the Wolves star replied: โI donโt know anything about that. I hope thatโs not the case. This group needs to be coached well and thatโs exactly the things we have been getting for a long time now.
โI hope he stays on after the [New Zealand] game. We were just talking about little things in the game โ the differences between getting results and not getting results.
โI have always backed him and he has always backed me. I would love to see him and all the staff stay.
โIf people really saw what itโs like on the training pitch, the changing room and how he cares about his players, just generally how they set us up, the attention to detail they have, I think you would be hard-pressed to find somebody else who can deliver that.โ
Tbh there is literally nothing Kenny can say after the results and performances that would convince fans he is the man to continue, butโฆ
his press conferences remind me of Gerrard at Villa, overtly claiming to be taking responsibility, while giving every possible excuse and heavily implying thatโs the players fault.
He talked a very big game while lobbying for the job, but years in there is absolutely of sign of progress or a coherent plan.
Hope FAI donโt abandon the attempt to play football, but hopefully this time they hire a competent manager
@John Fitz: name a competent manager whoโd be willing to take the job and name a manager who weโd still label as competent once theyโve tried to get us a tournament?
@Macho Movie Man: stupid question
@Macho Movie Man: Kenny is one of the better paid managers in international football.
Gus Poyet (not a fan, but a more competent manager) was literally asking for the job in press conferences while managing Greece to comfortably finish ahead of us.
This strawman argument that there is no one else to take the job is BS. Itโs an extremely well paying managerial gig with a tonne of promising players breaking through.
3 years ago if I said De Zerbi or Ange. Most would have said โwhoโ?
This time last season Rob Edwards was employed.
Not knowing the availability candidate who are interested is not a real to persist with Kenny
@John Fitz: 500k a year. Thatโs 1st division English league. Its a 10 year plan. Not many countries with semi pro league make major finals
@John Fitz: โone of the better paid managersโ. Gonna call BS on that. Deschamps gets 4 million p/a and heโs not even the best paid. Kenny is nowhere near the top of the list.
I donโt think Matt Dohertys opinion will hold much water with irish fans he should be ashamed of the performances he has put in for a manager heโd like to stay imagine how bad heโll be for Kennys replacement so
Will be interesting to see what direction the FAI go , they could do well to keep Kenny as Director of Football or in some senior development role, then get a more experienced manager in for the senior team โ Poyet would be interesting
If Kenny is not gone after the New Zealand game then I give up.
Coached well? Very debatable, provided with decent east to understand tactics? No a chance, very poor with in game management. You can be coached to high heaven but if you donโt have the tactical awareness to manage games it ainโt gonna end well, as results have showed
Irish football teams are embarrassing, they never look comfortable on the ball, you wonder what the fai are doing. Brilliant kids need to develop and not be coached to death.
Having been at the game we are slow to transition..Once Baz has the ball back we should be pushing out of defence and getting out wide and hitting counter attacks..We are too slow and allow opposition to get back into position..Thatโs why itโs so hard to create chances.. Also our crossing is shocking, donโt think we beat the first man once and even if we had of, 1 or 2 in the box is not going to get us a goal..I thought defensively we looked organised bar the goal which looked so easy with a few players taking dummies..
@Brian McMahon:
Our defending is diabolical from midfield to defense. Kenny canโt set-up a
defense
I think Kenny will regret not starting off his reign with his favoured 4-3-3 formation & sticking with it. The constant changing of formations didnโt help him.
