STEPHEN HENDRY WILL target eight hundred centuries and a return to the Crucible after making an impressive return to the professional snooker tour despite a 4-1 defeat to Matthew Selt in Milton Keynes.
The seven-times world champion compiled the 776th three-figure break of his career in the second frame of the Gibraltar Open first round match, extending a mark that had stood for so long it forms part of his permanent social media handles.
Hendry insisted: โI think Iโll only change them when I get to 800 โ 766 now is not a massive thing. Qualifying for the Crucible is the goal, and making 800 centuries is another goal. I am just enjoying being back really.โ
Hendry did little wrong in his first tour match since a 13-2 thrashing by Stephen Maguire in the quarter-finals of the 2012 World Championship, which had led the Scot to admit it was an โeasy decisionโ to walk away.
Despite a foul on his very first shot when he attempted a two-cushion roll-up to the pack of reds, Hendry showed every indication of being equipped for the challenge, culminating in his superb break of 107 to briefly level the match in the second frame.
Hendry added: โI really felt the nerves โ when I put my suit on in the hotel room thatโs when it really hit me, which is a good sign because without nerves you canโt perform. It just needs to be nerves of excitement, rather than nerves of not knowing whatโs going to happen.โ
Hendry will next set his sights on an unlikely return to the Crucible via four tough qualifying rounds next month, but admitted: โMy safety has to be tighter and my long game has to be better โ itโs not ready yet to qualify for the Crucible.
โI think thereโs work to do and Iโve got a month of practice to get it better. Iโve tried to keep the expectations down about my comeback. Itโs not about winning eight world titles. Iโm coming back to play in arenas, hopefully with people in them, and enjoy the buzz of competing.โ
The 52-year-old might have hoped for an easier start than against his good friend Selt, the world number 35 with a ranking title โ the 2019 Indian Open โ to his name.
Hendry accepted a two-year tour card from World Snooker Tour chairman Barry Hearn in September last year but rumours swirled over his true intentions after he pulled out of a series of projected comeback dates.
His bid was also questioned by a number of the gameโs current stars, with world number one Judd Trump describing Hendryโs move as a โstrange oneโ, and Ronnie OโSullivan warning he will be plunged into a โrat raceโ.
Despite his initial mistake, Hendry had cause for encouragement in the opening frame, as an impressive long blue set up a break of 38, before a loose safety ultimately handed the advantage to his opponent.
Hendry bounced back in vintage fashion in the following frame, seizing his opportunity after Seltโs missed brown to fashion a superbly-executed break to black of 107.
An immediate response of 65 set Selt up to nudge back in front at 2-1, and the 35-year-old maintained his stellar long-pot success to carve a break of 48 which proved enough to nudge him one frame from victory at 3-1.
Never the biggest fan of safety play, Hendry was left to acknowledge the improvements required in that element of his game if he is to stand a realistic chance of clawing his way back to the Crucible.
Selt continued his admirably focused display into the fifth frame, when he took two opportunities to build an unassailable advantage and close down his good friendโs comeback with a 4-1 win.
Selt conceded his surprise at the level of his friendโs performance admitting: โI wouldnโt have given him a hope of qualifying for the Crucible coming into this, but he has clearly proved he can get there, for sure.
โHe has the one thing that I donโt have and lot of others donโt have โ unbelievable amounts of bottle, and he has won everything in the game.
โWhen the opportunity presents itself, he will take it, whether itโs to win a match or get to the Crucible. Itโs a bit early to say he will be competing for titles, but if anyone can do it, after that performance I genuinely think he can make it.โ

Thatโs great work. Best of luck to all these lads. With the other new signings and maybe 1 or 2 more they could build a really good side.
@Chris Mc: tbh if they only add 1-2 new signings on top of these lads then I think theyโve got a significantly weaker squad than they had last season. They need a few lads who have experience of top level rugby and whoโre ready to go straight into the first team.
@Jim Demps: correct Jim unfortunately Connacht are being sacrificed for IRFU budget cuts
@Jim Demps: disappointing Jim to see Connacht cast once more as the IRFUโs development province in order that the increasingly desperate attempt to drag Munster to a trophy (any trophy) or even a final continues. There are still gaps at No8 and the full back/wing for Connacht to fill before we return to action in August, but it does seem like there will be just two (maximum) experienced arrivals.
@Jim Demps: Iโm with you on that one, at least 4 good players needed to be similar to last seasons squad
@David Finn: I still reckon thereโll be a bit more than that, Iโd be hopeful anyway. Maybe two overseas signings and another 2-3 internal?
@Jim Demps: youโd hope so.
@David Finn: theyโll be incredibly light if thatโs not the case
@Jim Demps: I think the 4 signing added to the players promoted with a injury free run and Carty and Marmion hitting form and they have the basis of a really decent side.
Itโs great these lads are getting a chance, but it doesnโt gloss over that that Connacht are getting weaker each year, badly need competition for places.
Delighted for the young lads but must say underwhelmed with recruitment and consequently our ambition for next couple years. Squad stripped off senior players , replaced with young lads who will take time to be able to survive at senior rugby never mind thriving which is what is needed. Hopefully 4 places still available to be filled with some decent senior strong players aka bring what Muldowney, McCartney, Fainga, Clarke, etc brought you Connacht.
Peter Sullivan has all the ingredients to make it let just hope theyโre all given a fair crack of the whip to develop.
Good to see youth promoted through the ranks and we wish them well in their careers.
There is no doubt that all squads will have tighten their belts and we will probably not see many if indeed any so called big money signings for a few years to come, other than those already agreed.
Academy players fit the bill, financially and also promote support from the fans, Ho have watched their development.
Patience will be required in that it is more than likely a two or three year project before it bears fruit.
Fantastic trust shown by Andy Friend and his coaching team and really building for the future. It sends a very strong message to young players in the province. Delighted for our 3 Buccaneers players, superb young men, very talented and deserve their shot
@Pol OโBroin: fantastic trust or lack of budget
