IRISH STRIKER STEPHANIE Roche has been released by Houston Dash, the club confirmed this evening.
Roche, who rose to prominence after her stunning goal for Peamount United went viral, only signed for the club last February and played a total 24 minutes of action for the club in two substitute appearances.
The move has been made as the club look to accommodate two new signings – Australian defender Ellie Brush and Brazilian player Camila.
In reaction to the news, Roche tweeted: “Very disappointed to finish up with Houston Dash. Impossible to appreciate the highs without experiencing the lows.”
Part of a statement on the club’s official website reads: “In corresponding moves to make room on the 20-player roster, defender Stephanie Ochs has been placed on the season-ending injury list after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL and forward Stephanie Roche has been waived.”
In addition, in an interview with KeeperNotes.com, Houston Dash coach Randy Waldrum elaborated on the club’s reasons for letting Roche go, explaining: “I really would have liked to have given her the time to be with us a season because I think she was getting better and better and adapting.
“Unfortunately, as I told her, as bad as we have been defensively, we had to make some moves. Two internationals, and the international spots being so critical, we had to let somebody go.”
“Unfortunately it came down to her; we just didn’t have the time to wait on her. I just hope I don’t grow to regret it at the end, but we had to do it with somebody.”
Dash fans and Twitter in general have largely expressed their sympathies to Roche…
Pro sport. It’s about more than one great moment.
Agreed but that’s the club’s fault for being so short-sighted.
Well that’s sh it
A few things around her come to a premature end I’d say
Perhaps they were reading too much into one moment.
Feel sorry for her, the hype & attention wasn’t up to her but I hope she’s made a bundle out of it.
She has the talent, its down to the club not allowing any settling in time. Take any player, move them to the other side of the world and expect them to have an impact after a few training sessions and 2 substitutions, its impossible. No matter what the sport, very few hit the grounding running after such a move. The manager will be fired once the club realize what a asset they let go.
Jesus youre deluded.Maybe its because with her lovely goal and all the hype people assumed she was better than she actually is.The US coach has basically said in a nice way that shes not good enough for that level of football.
Let’s hope she signed a contract then the club will have to pay her..
I doubt it.
Waived players don’t get paid in other US sports if they aren’t picked up by another side.
There is a spare No.8 Jersey in Anfield.
Comment of the week!
I’m a Liverpool fan, by the way.
Unlucky Stephanie, but can we now please stop talking about this woman because she scored a once off wonder goal in a nothing match between “somebody athletic” and “somebody else united”.
Hah excellent john , I know nobody us allowed say it but she may not that be that good after all they dropped her from a squad of 20 after three months
Such a bunch of naysayers…guys cop on, a lady soccer player has brought our soccer form into the notice of other countries. I said this months ago, the guys need to support the girls as much as the girls support the boys.
Get back to the kitchen Jenni
Bit harsh to say the least
She could always go to England to play for a Ladies team
If shes good enough, which I doubt as she wasnt good enough before her goal.Maybe her French club will take her back despite the poor circumstances in which she left them
There’s a bit of karma here too perhaps. She signed for a French club and left them in the lurch very quickly to go to the USA.
The comments from her (now previous) club suggest she was quite a bit off the standard and it would take a while to get her there (indeed if at all).
Good night and god bless. Poor Stephanie didn’t make the grade, hard luck girl I had this exact same experience as a striker albeit at a lesser level. All the same I was devo..
Women football is less exciting than watching chess… fact.
Chess boxing. Now there is a sport.
Have to say i feel bad for her. The meteoric rise in name recognition (from a tasty bit o skill to be fair) never seemed to get to her head from what i saw. Always seemed to be level headed and was a positive spokesperson for the sport.
I’m sure a decent side will pick her up and she will be successful in her career,
Well said Charlie. If you’re talking about low football standards, maybe she might get a game with the 2 former “Anfield Legends” Keane & Gerrard at the LA Galaxy !!!
Muppet
The journel needs to stop trying to make womans football “a thing”. Nobody cares!.
If any of you had a moment that gained global attention and lodged a 5 or 6 figure into your bank account, you’d take it & not give a shit about the begrudgers.
Good on her, even if it has fallen on its face.
What are you ranting about , who said they begrudge the money she made for a single albeit excellent strike? but that doesn’t mean she was a good footballer , reality is she came from a amateur team scored a great goal , irish media turned her into miss messi she got her shot in the pros and got cut after 3 months
Not ranting (ironically, given the rankled nature of your comment), simply saying I doubt she gives a shit about any of us deriding her talent, or lack of, given the exposure & revenue it’s gotten her.
I wouldn’t anyway.
Relax now.
I think she was fortunate to have a good goal at a low level recorded, hyped & ultimately rewarded, the fact she only made 2 substitute appearances speaks for itself, let’s not take anything away from her she’s done well, has achieved something lots of people can only dream about and hopefully made a few quid, she’ll surely have no problem getting another club, jersey sales alone is a plus for anything club
What revenue has she made? She openly said she didn’t make anything out of all the publicity surrounding the goal. Where are you getting the 5 or 6 figure sum from.
I hope she kept Ronaldo’s number.
What was her track record before that goal .
That’s the last we’ll hear of her then
Give the girl a chance pal…..!!!!
A big deal made outta a lucky moment.
I’m not surprised by the clubs decision at all. Was more surprised she was signed in the first place..
They are only allowed two international players u brain dead muppet
I completely agree. One fluke does not normally make a career. Best of luck to her and all but I suspect the right decision was made here.
So wait, despite that goal she scored she MIGHT NOT be a modern day Pele/Emily Pankhurst/Rosa Parks??
Who knew
Letting a striker go to get in defenders ? Not a very positive outlook.
LOL
Meow!
We’re always short players for our astro team on Tuesday’s
Fook off, astro
Lousy.. Come back Stephanie, there are far better teams you can play for and they deserve you, you’re a brilliant player
Your wrong unfortunately Jenni, she is now going back to amateur after being professional, also she has had a chance in England before but no club was willing to sign her. She just has not lived up to the hype the goal brought her, it’s a shame for her
Mark, Maybe you’re right, but I’d love if you were wrong, I just feel she shouldn’t have been shafted the way it’s reported.
Shafted? You mean by giving her a contract, then watching her in training etc and realising she’s not that good, then releasing her? Their only crime is stupidity, everything aside from that goal indicated that she wasn’t that good.
Wow, u sure know how to kick someone when they’re down.
Its football, shit happens, can’t be spending loads of money on people just cause you feel sorry for them
@jenni at least somebody’s kicks are connecting around here
Bound to happen . Flukey goal scored by somebody relying on their looks . #hasbeen#
that goal wasn’t much of a skill, but just fluke – skill is if someone scores many times similar goals, not just once… it happened to me once to kick empty can of coke and landed in the bin – (never again tho)
The begrudgers are out in force today. And all fellas. Who’d have thunk it?
The truth hurts
And the same guys and begrudgers also comment on the article about male footballers, do you come to make comments when that happens? Or are you irked that men are commenting about an article mentioning a woman??
Liverpool might buy her with the Sterling transfer money! But she might want CL football and a big club too! Can’t blame her!
Ah that’s a load of me bollox
Don’t worry Stephanie, talent will prevail.
She’s obviously not very good.
She was played !!
Well she wasn’t really! That’s why she’s been cut!
The backlash against her is quintessentially Irish.
