Staunton in line for Anfield coaching role?

Kenny Dalglish first brought the Irishman to the club as a 17-year-old in 1986.

ONE -TIME IRELAND BOSS Steve Staunton appears set to take on a coaching role with his former club Liverpool.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday to promote a Dundalk Legends v Liverpool Legends game at Oriel Park on 23 July, Staunton confirmed that he had been involved in talks with a Premier League club about a ‘football position’.

When pressed for further details, the Independent reports, the former defender said the club in question was on a pre-season tour, giving rise to speculation that it was indeed Liverpool, who are currently in the Far East.

“When they come back, we will discuss it further but it’s more or less done and dusted,” he is quoted as saying by the Irish Times.

Staunton gained 102 caps during an almost 15 year long international career with Ireland, later going on to manage his country. He also appeared for Liverpool 109 times during two separate spells at the club. His most recent managerial position at Darlington ended in 2010.

Would you welcome him back, Liverpool fans?
