Masterful Diarmuid Connolly the hero as St Vincent's clinch SFC club title

The Dublin forward was too hot to handle for Castlebar Mitchels at Croke Park this afternoon.

St Vincentโ€™s 4-12

Castlebar Mitchels 2-11

DIARMUID CONNOLLY DELIVERED a virtuoso performance in the St Vincentโ€™s attack to give the Dublin side a richly deserved SFC club final win. The Dublin forward scored 2-5 and set up his teamโ€™s two other goals in a seven point win over Castlebar Mitchels.

Shane Carthy opened the scoring for the Dubliners. Mitchels first notable contribution to the match was to lose Richie Feeney to a black card after only five minutes. They responded to the set-back when Patrick Durcan lofted over a point. Conolly and Tom King traded points before the Dublin forward found wing-back Michael Concarr, who calmly slotted home Vincentโ€™s first goal.

The following 15 minutes were dominated by the Connacht champions as King and Durcan kept up their scoring contributions. Points from Neil Lydon and Neil Douglas had Mitchels 0-8 to 1-2 after 25 minutes. Vincentโ€™s finished the half on a high, however, as Connolly set up Ciaran Dorney to ram home another goal. Ruairi Trainor and Mitchelsโ€™ Barry Moran traded points and the scores were level, 2-3 to 0-9, at the break.

King opened the scoring for the Mayo side after 31 minutes but Carthy soon levelled matters and Mossy Quinn put Vincentโ€™s ahead with two points on the spin. Conolloy extended the advantage before Lydon knocked over a steepler to keep his side in the hunt. Mitchels were right back in the match after 43 minutes, however, as Danny Kirby pounced on a rebound to make it 2-7 to 1-11.

Conollyโ€™s growing influence would soon show in dramatic fashion on the Croke Park scoreboard. A hopeful punt bounced over the Mitchels defence and the forward got a crucial flick on to direct the ball past Ciaran Naughton. He added two more points and, with 10 minutes left, Vincentโ€™s looked home clear. Conolly then weaved through the Castlebar defence and slotted home. He added yet another point to make it an 11-point game going into the last five minutes.

Kirby scored a close range goal for Mitchels to give them hope of a late comeback but Vincentโ€™s closed out the game and the final scores went to them as Carthy and Kevin Golden pointed.

Letting Lucas go to Napoli would be a huge mistake. Lucas has been a key player for Liverpool this season. He does the dirty work very well and yes he will get booked every 2nd game but heโ€™s good at what he does. Liverpool have lost most of the games theyโ€™ve played without Lucas which is another key factor in him staying. Also replacing him with Delph? Another over rated English centre mid who produced a handful of decent appearances last season but nothing to capture the imagination.

Yep was just going to say it man. To be honest last summer Iโ€™d have let him go but heโ€™s been the difference since coming back at the end of November. I think the only game weโ€™ve lost since has been man utd and he wasnโ€™t playing that dayโ€ฆ.
Letting him go now would be a mistake especially if they think they can replace him with Delph! Whoโ€™s more like for like with Joe Allen than Lucas anyway.
Which leads me to my next pointโ€ฆ Sell Joe Allen

Who in their right mind would buy Joe Allen though? Unless Rodgers gets the sack and buys him for his next club..

โ€˜Mรผller to Manchester Unitedโ€™ anyone who believes this should read the book Pep: Confidential, and thatโ€™ll end all rumours. Guardiola holds Mรผller in the highest regard and has big plans for the future, over time he wants him to pay much deeper in midfield, doubt heโ€™d sacrifice those plans to sell him to United

Youโ€™re probably right but we reds can dream! He looks enough like Lahm that we could stick him at right back and heโ€™d still be exponentially better than Rafaelโ€ฆ

United donโ€™t need him anyway, they already have 4 players who play in largely the same position.

If Rodgers sells Lucas to Napoli I think questions will have to be asked about this man. Heโ€™s already driven Suso out of the club, a player who deserves much more game time and would run circles around players like Borini whoโ€™ve started ahead of him. He also got rid of Agger, yet kept Kolo, and despite lots of investment in our back4 weโ€™re actually worse than last season.

His persistent refusal to get a decent defensive coach in is costing our team valuable points because of his ignorance to the fact that he canโ€™t organise a defence, never mind to the standards of other defense-organising managers like Simeone or Mourinho. If Lucas goes, we have little hope of top4 imo, heโ€™s one of the only decent defensive mids we have and is much better than rodgerโ€™s favourite, Joe Allen.

Remember when Benitez took a huge gamble trying to sign Gareth Barry and disillusioned Xabi?!
Didnโ€™t sign Barry and Xabi fooked off!!
Lucas is far more experienced than Delph, Iโ€™d sign him and hold onto Delph and let him gain experience while he is there for the rest of the season!

Despite the Champions League success, I still cannot find it in me to not hate Rafa over losing Xabi Alonso. He did his best to lose that final too by not starting Didi Hamann!
