St Kieranโs College 1-14
CBS Kilkenny 0-13
Trevor Spillane reports from Nowlan Park
ST KIERANโS COLLEGE made it a hat-trick of Leinster schools senior hurling titles, but it was sweeter that the win came against their local rivals CBS Kilkenny.
Captain Adrian Mullen played his part, notching up 0-10 (0-3 frees and one 65) as the Saints came from behind to see off the CBS in Nowlan Park.
Starting with a strong wind at their backs the CBS, who were spurred on by their captain Niall Brassil, stormed into a 0-7 to 0-4 lead late in the first half. They could have been further in front, but a series of wides let Kieranโs off the hook.
The Saints hit back late on, narrowing the gap with an Evan Shefflin point. They almost followed up with a goal, but Diarmuid Phelanโs angled shot was beaten away by CBS goalkeeper Ben Maher. Mullen converted the resulting 65, leaving just a point between the sides at the break (CBS 0-7, Kieranโs 0-6).
Kieranโs were quick off the mark after the restart, taking a slender lead with points from Daithi Barron and Mullen. They had an extra gear in the second half, but they couldnโt shake off the CBS, who fought back to level the game on three occasions.
The decisive push came in the closing stages, when Mullen battled for space to shoot a point and then converted a free to make it 0-14 to 0-12 with two minutes to play. Niall Brassil cut the gap back to a point with a free, but an injury-time goal from Sean Ryan (his shot deceived Maher, who was blinded by the sun) gave Kieranโs the cushion that led to their 55th provincial title.
Scorers for St Kieranโs College - Adrian Mullen (0-10, 0-3 frees, 0-1 65); Sean Ryan (1-0); Daithi Barron (0-2); Evan Shefflin, Ciaran Brennan (0-1 each)
Scorers for CBS Kilkenny โ Niall Brassil (0-4, 0-1 free); Sean Boyd (0-3); Ben Maher (0-2, frees); Sean Bolger (0-2); Conor Heary (0-1); Conor Drennan (0-1, free).

Well done Aidan, you and Michaela did your family and Ireland proud.
The last couple of seconds of that video are lovely. All the best now. Unfortunate the ankle stuff, he seems like a good lad.
Great attitude. Fantastic achievement.
Thatโs nice.
Quality interview by young Aidan Walsh. A little statistic here : Of the 7 boxers this small little country sent we could have had a silver but for injury and we are guaranteed a medal with Kellie me I think itโs going to be gold and the five other boxers who lost 4 of there opponents are guaranteed a medal, it just shows you the class of our boxers with luck we could have won 6 medals Take a huge bow irelandโs boxers and coaches.
While Iโm delighted and thrilled with our medals in Tokyo I feel I must raise the issue of RTE pleading the poor mouth and looking for an increase in TV Licence. Its bad enough the wages there top presenters get but they have sent Clare McNamara, Jackie Hurley, David Gillick, Joe Stack, Paul o Flynn, George Hamilton, Greg Allen, Des Cahill to Tokyo i donโt know if the commentators I havenโt mentioned are in a studio in rte commentating or in Tokyo. Then in studio here we have Darragh Moloney and and about 20 other analysts on the programme. The cheek of them to look for an increase in licence fee. There should be only 4 in Tokyo not 8 and and they only need one expert at home per sport and not 2.
@postmanbill:
Then you wonโt get these type of interviewsโฆ This is a our sporting history and documenting properly once every four years
Yes the people who sent are avid sports fans as well as professionals and I donโt begrudge them enjoying it too
No begrudgery just think thereโs to many over there for example you donโt need Jackie Hurley and Claire McNamara basically doing the same job and the same goes for Paul O Flynn and Joe Stack. Maybe I would not be so annoyed if RTE did not come looking for increase in licence every year and for what 75% repeats on there stations. You must be part of the group who have no problem paying for TV licence.
