All-Ireland Colleges SAHC final

Dungarvan Colleges (Waterford) 1-12
Kilkenny CBS 1-7

DUNGARVAN COLLEGES WON the Masita GAA All-Ireland senior Colleges senior hurling A championship for the very first time this afternoon, courtesy of a hard-fought victory over Kilkenny CBS at Semple Stadium.

Playing in their first Croke Cup decider, Dungarvan inflicted a second successive final defeat on Kilkenny CBS, in what was a repeat of last year’s quarter-final between the sides.

Kilkenny CBS played for the last 25 minutes of normal time – plus three extra added on for stoppages – with 14 players.

Full-back Evan Cody was dismissed for a wild swipe on Patrick Curran as Dungarvan’s superb forward bore down on goal in the 35th minute.

From the resultant penalty, Curran saw his effort saved by Kilkenny CBS defender Paddy Deegan.

Apart from that, Curran was the main threat for Dungarvan as the ace attacker finished with a personal tally of 0-9, including six points from placed balls.

Curran rattled over six points in the opening half as Dungarvan, playing against the breeze in sunny Thurles, opened up a 1-8 to 1-3 interval lead.

Ryan Donnelly, scorer of two goals in this year’s Harty Cup final, netted in the 15th minute as he somehow bundled the ball over the line despite being grounded.

Kilkenny CBS hit back with a goal of their own within two minutes, as Laurence Power’s mistake allowed Paddy Cahill to profit.

But Power redeemed himself in the second half with some assured handling and one cracking save to deny Kevin Kenny.

Dungarvan, who registered 14 wides in total (eight in the first half) had other goal chances of their own.

From Curran’s handpass, midfielder Cormac Curran was smothered by CBS goalkeeper Darragh Holohan four minutes from time.

The red card was the correct call by referee Shane Hourigan but Kilkenny CBS were unhappy that the Limerick whistler allowed a Tadhg Burke challenge on Kenny to go unpunished seven minutes from time.

After receiving lengthy treatment, Kenny sat out the remainder of the game.

Scorers for Dungarvan Colleges: Patrick Curran 0-9 (5f, 1 65), Ryan Donnelly 1-0, Colin Dunford 0-2, Michael Harney 0-1.

Scorers for Kilkenny CBS: Paddy Cahill 1-3 (0-3f), JP Treacy 0-2 (1 65), Kevin Kenny & Robbie Buckley 0-1 each.

All-Ireland Vocational SAHC final

St Fergal’s (Rathdowney) 2-10
St Brigid’s (Loughrea) 0-13

ST Fergal’s, Rathdowney, staged a quite remarkable comeback to win this afternoon’s last-ever Masita GAA All-Ireland Vocational SAHC final in Thurles.

The Laois outfit came from ten points down against St Brigid’s of Loughrea, who were looking to claim a third successive crown.

The Galway boys were awarded the competition in the boardroom in 2012 after the abandonment of the semi-final between Nenagh VS and St Fergal’s – and they started as favourites to get the job done on the field of play.

At half-time at Semple Stadium today, a rampant St Brigid’s were 0-10 to 0-2 ahead and they extended that lead with the opening two points of the second half.

But for the remainder of the game, breeze-assisted St Fergal’s outscored their Galway opponents by 2-8 to 0-3.

Gavin Dunne was superb at centre back for St Fergal’s, who claimed the title for the second time, with their previous success achieved in 2006.

With four minutes remaining, St Fergal’s trailed by three points but Aidan Corby tied the game with a brilliantly-taken goal in the 56th minute.

And in the final minute of normal time, full-forward Daire Quinlan beat St Brigid’s full-back Garry McHugo to Robbie Phelan’s delivery before whopping home a winning goal.

In the first half, the St Brigid’s inside line of Daniel Nevin, top scorer Brian Molloy and Jamie Ryan notched 0-9 between them.

Scorers for St Fergal’s: Daire Quinlan 1-3 (0-2f), Aidan Corby 1-1, Liam O’Connell (0-1 ’65), Mark Kavanagh (0-1 sideline) 0-2 each, Conor Kilbane, Colm Stapleton 0-1 each.
Scorers for St Brigid’s: Brian Molloy 0-6 (0-2f), Jamie Ryan 0-3, Daniel Nevin 0-2, Darragh Dolan & Eanna Burke 0-1 each.

Subs: Eoin Fitzpatrick (Borris/Kilcotton) for Whelan (38), Damian Hogan (Clough-Ballacolla) for Bergin (46), Stephen Phelan (Borris/Kilcotton) for Cleere (60+1).

ST BRIGID’S (LOUGHREA): Ronan Brennan (Kilconieron); Joseph Mooney (Loughrea), Garry McHugo (Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry), Declan Cronin (Cappataggle); Conor Jennings (Loughrea), Darragh O’Donoghue (Kilnadeema-Leitrim), Patrick Prendergast (Craughwell); Darragh Dolan (Craughwell), Eanna Burke (St Thomas’s); Brian Dolan (Craughwell), Jarlath Mannion (Cappataggle), Jamie Monaghan (Cappataggle); Daniel Nevin (Cappataggle), Brian Molloy (Kilnadeema-Leitrim), Jamie Ryan (Loughrea).

Dont speak so soon. Have the quarter final refs been announced yet? I have a feeling we will win our group and get Barnes as ref for our quarter final which would probably be against Argentina. Winner would probably play England. This is the game I do not want Barnes any where near.

He’s assistant ref 1 for the French match so he’ll go out of his way to interfere in some way…sans doute..!!!

I’m also glad we’ve avoided Barnes – far too fussy a ref, makes himself central to the match, usually to the detriment of the spectacle. Having said all of that, he’s not the worst.

The worst referee – by some distance – in world rugby right now is Romain Poite. That guy is just bonkers – no consistency at all, and clueless at scrum time. There is no pattern to his refereeing except that it is always unpredictable. We have managed to avoid him for all of our group games (he is an assistant to Joubert in the Romania game, but that shouldn’t prove too bothersome).

Quite predictable, that the Irish get their favourite referee (i.e. – the only one that doesn’t like to penalise Irish sides). The Irish run rugby in the Northern Hemisphere.

In Owens’ last 2 6N matchs between France and Ireland, he didn’t penalise the Irish in 153 minutes (yes, 153, that’s over 2 and a half hours.)

Interesting, and odd, to note that there is not one Australian referee taking charge of any of the 40 group matches. Their two guys are assistants and TMO only. By contrast, the two Irish fellas have 6 games between them.

FFR 11 (including 4 for Poite!)
    IRFU 6
    NZR 6
    RFU 6
    SARU 8
    WRU 3

No referees from Argentina, Australia, Italy or Scotland
