Defoe and Vertonghen give Spurs the edge against Sheriff

The Londoners had Vlad Chiriches to thank for keeping them ahead against their Moldovan opponents.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR BEAT Sheriff Tiraspol 2 — 0 thanks to a couple of fine interventions by their defenders and a deflected Jermaine Defoe strike.

Jan Vertonghen towered above the Moldovan defence to score a header, from a Christian Eriksen cross, after 12 minutes of Spurs’ Europa League clash.

The lead could have been short-lived had it not been for an excellent goalline clearance by Spurs central defender Vlad Chiriches.

Andros Townsend should have doubled the Londoners' lead after 20 minutes but fired straight at Vjekoslav Tomic after he was sent through on goal. Sheriff had a disallowed goal on 30 minutes and were the better of the two sides for the remainder of the half.

Spurs started better after the break and Aaron Lennon saw a shot cannon off the post. The visitor's second-half endeavours were rewarded when Nacer Chadli squared for Defoe on 75 minutes. The England striker's shot took a sizeable deflection but he will, no doubt, claim it as his 22nd European goal for the club.
