Special guest: F1 driver Button finishes seventh in Athy triathlon

The McLaren man prepared for tomorrow’s Bavaria City Race by competing in the Olympic distance event.

JUST SHORT OF 1,000 athletes turned out to compete in this afternoon’s Double Olympic, Olympic and Try-a-Tri in Athy but all eyes were on one particular participant.

Formula One driver Jenson Button will take part in the Bavaria City Racing in Dublin tomorrow but decided to arrive early and try his luck in the Olympic Distance race.

As the finish sheet below shows, the 32-year-old obviously doesn’t spend all his time behind the wheel as he finished an impressive seventh in the event and second in his age category (30-34) behind Irish triathlete Brian McCrystal, who was the overall runner-up.

“I believe he is big into triathlons and has done them in places like Hawaii before,” said Scott Morrissey of Triathlon Ireland.

At the end, he gave a quick speech in which he thanked people for their great support and added that he was delighted to be a part of such a fast-growing sport.”
