SOUTHAMPTON HAVE CONFIRMED the appointment of Nathan Jones as the clubโs new manager with Westmeath native Alan Sheehan joining him as a first-team coach at St Maryโs.
Former Luton boss Jones, 49, had been widely expected to take charge after the Saints sacked predecessor Ralph Hasenhuttl on Monday.
A club statement read: โSouthampton is delighted to announce it has appointed Nathan Jones as its new menโs first-team manager.
โThe 49-year-old joins from Luton, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract at St Maryโs, where he will also be joined by first-team coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan.โ
The presence of Athlone native Sheehan adds Irish interest to the appointment. The 36-year-old has been a first-team coach with Luton since his retirement from playing earlier this year in January.
Sheehan made over 450 appearances in England as a player, filling the role of club captain during his spells at Luton Town and Notts County. He skippered Luton to promotion to the Championship from League Two. At international level he was capped at U19 and U21 for Ireland.
Saints had been given permission to approach Jones following Lutonโs Sky Bet Championship defeat at Stoke on Tuesday and the Welshman will take charge of Saturdayโs Premier League game at Liverpool.
Jones, who guided Luton to the Championship play-offs last season, said: โIโm really proud to be given this opportunity.
โI know a lot about the club from back in the days of The Dell, to coming here to St Maryโs, and itโs a wonderful football club.
โA lot of my family are Southampton fans, which doesnโt half help, and I feel really, really proud to be given the opportunity, and Iโm really looking forward to getting started.โ
Hasenhuttl, who had been appointed in December 2018, was sacked after Sundayโs 4-1 home defeat to Newcastle had left them in the bottom three, with just one win in their last nine league games.
Former Brighton and Yeovil midfielder Jones has had two spells in charge of Luton, winning promotion from League Two before becoming Stoke boss in 2019.
Jones returned to Kenilworth Road 18 months later and guided them to a sixth-placed finish in the Championship last season before they lost to Huddersfield in the play-off semi-finals.
He added: โObviously, I wanted to manage in the Premier League, Iโve dreamt of that since Iโve become a coach or a manager.
โBut this club in particular โ because of how itโs run, because of the structure, because of how they look deeper than just results โ really appeals to me.โ
So heโs not going to Newcastle then
@Richard OโBrien: Thought he was a shoe-in for Derby County. Everything he needs there too.. sorry, except the bottomless pit of money.
@An Observer: your not suggesting that the reason heโs so successful is the cash he can flash are you. The citeh fans wonโt like that
@Richard OโBrien: An awful lot more to management than money. Obviously he can buy whoever he wants but then he has to handle all those huge egos, keep them happy and get them playing for the team, which I think is the secret to his success. If it was just about money Mickey Mouse could be manager.
@ger oโ dwyer: thanks for the lesson and I donโt necessarily disagree but I think it takes a better manager to be successful without the cash
@Richard OโBrien: careful now, in the spirit of the 21st century we shouldnโt take the piss out of minority groups.
Great to hear a man with extensive knowledge of the game commenting about how good a league the premiership is, a lot of haters out their saying the premier league is a joke, because only one or two teams can win it, which is not to far from the truth, but the overall competition for placing is brilliant and always throws up battles for the winners, top four, europa spots and relegation.
@Devilsavocado: I mean isnโt that the case for most of the top leagues in Europe?
@Devilsavocado: style of football lacking still. Too many foreigners. Should see if this year was a one off in terms of Europe, Spain has pretty much ruled the roost for a decade or more on the club and international scene. Best players like Hazard still know the best gravy. Lots love the hustle n bustle of the premier league but prob know little else.
