South Africa fans watched on enviously as CJ Stander made his Ireland debut

The back-row delivered a man-of-the-match performance as Ireland drew with Wales at the weekend.

THE CONSENSUS SUGGESTS CJ Stander delivered a phenomenal performance as Ireland drew 16-16 with Wales in their opening Six Nations match, and the statistics back this up.

And while Irish supporters were savouring Stander’s influential display on his debut, rugby fans from his native South Africa were watching on wondering what might have been.

The 25-year-old previously represented the Springboks at underage level, with some people previously suggesting Stander was “too small” to make an impact for his country at international level.

Yet on the basis of yesterday’s display, the Munster player seems to have proved a few people wrong.
