Sensational own goal ends South Africa's World Cup dreams

Bernard Parker scored at both ends in last night’s qualifier in Addis Ababa.

WORLD CUP 2010 hosts South Africa will not be at the finals in Brazil next year thanks to a comical own goal.

Needing to win against Ethiopia, Bernard Parker gave Bafana Bafana some hope with the opener after 33 minutes. The home side equalised through Getaneh Kebede in the second half before disaster struck.

Kaiserchiefs midfielder Parker was back defending an Ethopia free-kick but, instead of clearing the danger, he somehow managed to send a bullet header into the top corner of his own net.

With one game to play South Africa can’t progress while Ethopia go through to the play-offs.
