Sligo Rovers record historic first away win in Europe

The Bit o’Red beat Rosenborg 2-1 in the Europa League second qualifying round.

Rosenborg 1-2 Sligo Rovers

SLIGO ROVERS HAVE recorded their first ever European away win with a 2-1 victory over Norwegian side Rosenborg this evening.

Alan Keane and Danny North were the heroes for the Bit o’Red who were good value for their win in this UEFA Europa League second qualifying round first leg tie.

John Coleman’s men took the lead 11 minutes after half-time when Keane was first to react after his initial shot was blocked and made no mistake at the second attempt when Rosenberg ‘keeper Alexander Hansen dived the wrong way.

Their lead was doubled with twenty minutes to play after John Russell’s low cross was finished by North to send the visiting fans into raptures.

Far from resting on their two goal advantage, Sligo pushed forward with North again going close 15 minutes from time while a dipping effort from David Cawley went just over five minutes later.

Nine minutes from time, Rosenborg pulled one back when Sligo goalkeeper Gary Rogers saw his punched clearance bounce off American Mikkel ‘Mix’ Diskerud for a fortuitous consolation.

Sligo had a chance to restore their two goal cushion three minutes from the end but Paul O’Conor’s effort was cleared off the line.

The second leg takes place in the Showgrounds next Thursday July 24.
