ANXIOUS TO STEER Manchester United clear of charges of gross hypocrisy, Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken publicly of his frustration with fans who insist on singing chants about the Hillsborough disaster.
The Premier League leaders face Liverpool this weekend in a fixture that has in the past been marred by insensitive chants drawing attention to the 1989 tragedy in which 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives.
Having only recently endured and criticised songs about the 1958 Munich air disaster– an accident that decimated one of the club’s most promising squads– the United manager expressed to the BBC his hope that “the game of the season in English football” prove uneventful from the perspective of fan unrest.
“That’s sometimes annoying when I hear silly chants about Munich, about Hillsborough, I don’t think it does either club any good at all”
Ferguson also sounded cautiously optimistic on the subject of Nemanja Vidic, whom the Scot believes on the verge of making his return from injury.
