CHAMPIONS SIMONSTOWN GAELS booked a return to the county showpiece with a hard-fought and enthralling victory over neighbours Wolfe Tones at Pairc Tailteann this afternoon.
Four goals split between both halves – the first couple from Nathan O’Brien and Mark McCabe, the second-half strikes from and McCabe again as well as captain Pauric McKeever – saw Gaels back to their second successive final, but the victors were still confronted with a nervy finish as their never-say-die opponents came within a whisker of manufacturing a comeback.

By the 59th minute just two points separated the sides, with Gaels leading 3-8 to 1-12. Simonstown edged a further point in front in stoppage time before their opponents fashioned a last-gasp, guilt-edged chance to level proceedings. The ball, however, squirmed wide right from point-blank range, and the champions went up the other end to seal their spot in this year’s final, skipper McKeever combining with Michael Brennan for the coup de grace.
