Are you watching Jonno? Simon Geoghegan leaves Martin Johnson in his wake in 1994. INPHO

20 years after his try against England, Simon Geoghegan is making a comeback

Now aged 45, the former Ireland winger will line out in the final London Irish match at The Avenue.

THE NAME ‘SIMON GEOGHEGAN’ still evokes memories of a blitzing Irish try against England at Twickenham in 1994 and his billowing, green jersey.

The jerseys are a lot tighter today and Geoghegan’s blonde locks do not waft as much in the wind. Nonetheless, the 37-time capped winger should still have a devastating side-step in his locker. The 45-year-old is one of several former Irish players lining out for a double testimonial match, on Saturday, that also serves as a farewell to the avenue.

The ground has served London Irish for the past 79 years but the Exiles have outgrown its surrounds and moved to the Madejski Stadium. Saturday afternoon’s game will also be a testimonial of club legends Topsy Ojo and Declan Danaher.

Among the players that will line out include Geoghegan, TheScore.ie columnists Shane Byrne and Adrian Flavin, and a host of former Ireland internationals. A selection of the players togging out include Kieron Dawson, Malcolm O’Kelly, Tyrone Howe, Bob Casey and Justin Bishop.

Geoghegan, not for the first time, will attract attention. It has been 20 years since he tore it up at Twickenham in the Five Nations.
