Shay Given became third-oldest player to appear in a Premier League opener earlier

His Stoke side were held to a 1-1 draw by Middlesbrough.

HE MAY HAVE retired from international football following Euro 2016 but there’s still plenty of hunger and desire in Shay Given.

He turned 40 in April but since the landmark birthday, he’s started three Premier League games – the latest of which was this afternoon as his Stoke City side faced new boys Middlesbrough.

In the process, he became the third-oldest player to feature in a Premier League opening day fixture.

And although he was beaten by Alvaro Negredo after 11 minutes, Given’s Potters responded through Xherdan Shaqiri with 23 minutes left.

With Jack Butland still in the treatment room, Given can look forward to plenty more minutes.
