SHANE LOWRY’S MIRACLE wedge on the final hole of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, which the Irishman ultimately triumphed at, has been voted the 2015 European Tour Shot of the Year.

Lowry overcame competition from Rory McIlroy, Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Patrick Reed among others to be named the winner of the award after a public vote.

“It’s a huge honour to win European Tour Shot of the Year, it’s a shot I will never forget,” Lowry told europeantour.com. “Thanks to everyone who voted. I’m looking forward to another great season in 2016. I can’t wait to get back to competitive golf next week in Malaysia when I represent Europe in the EurAsia Cup.”

The 28-year-old Offaly native was under immense pressure, holding a one-shot lead in the final hole, but persevered to claim his first WGC title.

“It was actually a pretty horrific lie,” he recalled.

It was sitting down in a hole. It was almost like someone had stood on it, but it was where the crowd was walking. And I just said to Dermot, I’ll try and hit sand wedge and just get it down to the front of the green. I pulled it a bit too low and went into the tree.

“The rest is history.”
