After just missing out on a move to Hull in the summer, Long has endured an indifferent start to the season but last night’s performance follows on from goals against Chelsea and Latvia.
“Shane’s performance at Chelsea everyone spoke about – he did really well,” he said.
“He got another goal when he was away with the Republic and he showed tonight when he’s on his top level he is a force to be reckoned with. I thought his first finish especially was good.
You just think of that skill of bringing the ball down over your shoulder – which is really difficult – and shifting it onto his weaker left foot, which by the way he hit it you wouldn’t know was his weaker foot.
“The second finish showed good anticipation to read the poor pass across the back and a good finish.
On Long’s contract issues, Clarke added: “I’ve said all along Shane would have a big part to play for us this season and he’s proving that on the pitch – and that’s all he can do.
“I’m sure the club will sit down sometime in the future and sort his contract out.”
‘When Shane’s on top form he’s a force to be reckoned with’ – Steve Clarke
WEST BROM BOSS Steve Clarke says he wants Shane Long’s contract situation resolved after a superb brace from the striker last night.
Long scored twice as the Baggies drew 2-2 against Midlands rivals Aston Villa at the Hawthorns and his third-minute opener was particularly special. Latching on to Chris Brunt’s ball over the top, the Ireland international showed a brilliant first touch to bring it under control before shooting past Brad Guzan.

In a post-match interview on the club’s website, Clarke spoke glowing of the Tipperary native.
