Shane Long's end-of-season form earns him Southampton Player of the Month

“It’s nice that the fans are showing faith in me.”

SHANE LONG HAS been voted by Southampton fans as the club’s Player of the Month for April.

The Ireland striker is showing fine form with his club, who currently sit sixth in the Premier League, and will hope to carry that through to the European Championships next month.

Long scored twice, against Newcastle and Aston Villa, and added three assists throughout the month to help the Saints secure seven points and boost their European hopes.

This is the second time this year the Tipperary native has picked up the award, which he also claimed in December.

Long told Southampton’s Youtube channel that he was “delighted” to be chosen for the award.

“We’re on a good run at the moment and playing some good football. I’ve managed to chip in with a few goals.

“It’s nice that the fans are showing faith in me and giving me this award. When they pick you out as a stand-out player, it’s always an honour.

“We’re still in contention to get into that European spot and we’ve got nothing to lose,” he added.

Brilliant signing for Rover’s. A real coup, sick as a Pat’s fan. Well done son.

Remember when Stan tried playing him as a holding midfielder in a home game against Cyprus. The final nail in stans coffin. It was unfortunate for o’brien being asked to play an unnatural position, don’t think his international career really recovered. Good luck to him in the LOI

@Dave O’Hanlon: was thinking the exact same thing . I think he came off at half time having had a pretty good game in a 0-0 with Germany
