SHANE DUFFY GAVE Ireland the perfect start in their World Cup qualifier against Georgia, heading the side into an early lead after just four minutes.

Cyrus Christie curled in a dangerous cross which Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Makaridze tried to claim with a punch inside the box.

Duffy, however, rose highest and with a powerful looping header steered the ball beyond the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give Martin O’Neill’s side the lead.

It was the Brighton defender’s first goal for Ireland on his 12th senior appearance.

Georgia brought the scores level half an hour later, however. Valeri Kazaishvili steered a low effort beyond Darren Randloph as his side continued to put Ireland under significant pressure.
