Rovers' reconstruction continues with signing of former Sheffield United midfielder McAllister

The 27-year-old midfielder has been in England since 2011.

SHAMROCK ROVERS HAVE added another few face to their squad for 2017, as well as promoting three youngsters to the first team.

Rovers today announced the signing of midfielder Dave McAllister, who has been plying his trade in England for the past six years.

The 28-year-old Drogheda native had spells in the League of Ireland with Drogheda United, Shelbourne and St Patrick’s Athletic before being signed by Sheffield United in 2011.

McAllister went on to make 20 appearances for the Blades and eventually moved on to Shrewsbury Town. Most recently he lined out for League Two side Stevenage.

“It’s been a long process getting this deal over the line and we’re delighted with the type of midfielder we’re signing,” said Shamrock Rovers head coach Stephen Bradley.

“Dave adds to what is now a very experienced midfield in our squad. Dave has a lot of experience from the League of Ireland and away in England so we’re absolutely delighted to sign him here today.”

Rovers, who finished fourth in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division in 2016, have already brought in Darren Meenan, Roberto Lopes, Ryan Connolly, Paul Corry and Dan Devine for next season.

McCallister said: “I am delighted to sign here today. I’ve chatted both to Stephen McPhail and Stephen Bradley and I’m really excited about the future here at Rovers.

“They sat me down and showed me the plans. I’ve really bought into the future at Rovers and I’m absolutely delighted to be a part of it. I’m raring to get going now in pre-season.

“I know a number of the Rovers squad, in particular Paul Corry with whom I’ve had a few battles in games in England. We have a good blend of experience along with the younger lads on their first pro contracts and I’m looking forward to giving the benefit of my experience to the younger lads here at Rovers.

“I’m delighted to sign for the club and I can’t wait to get out on the pitch at Tallaght Stadium. It’s the best stadium in the league, to play in front of the Hoops’ fans and win trophies.”

Shamrock Rovers also announced today that youth team players Aaron Bolger, Dean Dillon and Luke Kiely have all signed their first professional contracts.
