Shamrock Rovers in the driving seat after scoreless draw in Luxembourg

The Hoops will welcome Progrès Niederkorn to Dublin next week.

SHAMROCK ROVERS WILL be favourites to advance in the Europa League after a scoreless draw in Luxembourg this evening.

The League of Ireland side will be disappointed they didn’t do better against a ring-rusty Progrès Niederkorn side at Stade Municipal de Differdange however.

Pat Fenlon’s men had a strong start to the first-half, with Simon Madden getting forward well to deliver a cross into Kieran ‘Marty’ Waters, but Waters could not get his header on target. Drennan went closer midway through the first period, with his drive from outside the area going wide off the post.

Drennan had another decent chance near the end of the first period, but Niederkorn were unlucky not to break the deadlock as Giussepe Rossini’s lofted effort hit the woodwork after the Belgian lobbed Hyland.

Hyland was in good form in the second-half as the hosts sought an opener. Rossini was denied by the Hoops stopper just after the interval, and then had to produce fine saves to deny Sebastien Thill twice in four minutes. Dylan Kavanagh and Cian Kavanagh came off the bench as Fenlon looked to youth, but neither could make the difference with time running out.

The home leg is next Tuesday at Tallaght Stadium.
