Shamrock Rovers keep up their winning ways against UCD

The Hoops won 2-0, while there were draws in the evening’s other two Airtricity League matches.

SHAMROCK ROVERS RECORDED a 2-0 win away to UCD to get back within four points of league leading Sligo Rovers.

Gary Twigg got Rovers off to a perfect start with a goal after five minutes and the Hoops doubled their lead after 68 minutes when Gary McCabe cut in and drove low past Mark McGinley.

Oscar Jansson has come in for some criticism this season but the Rovers goalkeeper was excellent throughout and fully earned his clean sheet.

Thomas Stewart, in his second spell with the league champions, had two great chances to score late on but Stephen Kenny will be delighted with his team’s first back-to-back victories since March.

In other Airtricity action, there were draws for Cork City and Derry, and Bohemians against Bray Wanderers.

Ian Turner gave Cork the first-half lead against Dundalk at Oriel Park but the home side struck back after 60 minutes when Gary Shanahan found the target.

Dinny Corcoran had the best chance of the night for Bohemians at Dalymount Park but his lofted effort in the 81st minute hit the top of the crossbar.

Sligo Rovers play Drogheda United at the Showgrounds on Saturday at 7.45pm.
