Shakhtyor too good as Derry City crash out of Europe

The Irish side took the lead after 6 minutes, but it was all downhill from there.

DERRY CITY’S EUROPA League adventure came to an end this evening, after they were beaten 5-1 on the night and 6-1 on aggregate by Shakhtyor Soligorsk of Belarus.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg at the Brandywell, there was brief hope for Peter Hutton’s side, as Michael Duffy opened the scoring to level the tie on aggregate after just six minutes.

Duffy pounced after Rory Patterson’s shot could only be parried into his path by the goalkeeper.

Yet Shakhtyor’s response was almost immediate – Sergej Balanovich equalised three minutes later, before Alexandre Guruli’s pot shot found the net on 28 minutes.

With a little over 20 minutes remaining, the game was effectively ended as a contest, when Dzmitry Asipenka made it 3-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate.

Two goals in the last 10 minutes from Nikolai Yanush and Ilya Galyuza further added to the Irish side’s misery, as their European dream was ended in emphatic fashion.
