Keita admits turning down Liverpool move after 'advanced' talks

The former Barcelona midfielder opted to join Valencia instead of the Reds in the January transfer window.

SEYDOU KEITA HAS revealed he was in “advanced” talks with Liverpool before opting to move to Valencia.

The former Sevilla and Barcelona man signed for Valencia towards the end of the January transfer window, agreeing a loan deal from Chinese side Dalian Aerbin until the end of the season.

However, upon his unveiling at Mestalla, Keita told reporters he had contemplated a move to the Premier League.

“When we received the call from Valencia, talks with Liverpool were at a very advanced stage,” the midfielder said.

But then I told my agent we were going to Valencia. I did not doubt for a second.

“When I came to play at Mestalla with Sevilla or Barcelona I suffered a lot to win, because this is a really big club with fantastic fans. That is why I opted to come here.”

The Mali international’s deal includes the option for a year’s extension in the summer, and Keita is happy to see how things progress over the remainder of the season before deciding further on his future.

“It is important that this is clear,” he said. “I am coming here from China. To sign for a year and a half is a difficult thing for the club.

“I told them to relax, that I would sign for six months and if I have the right level we will all have time to continue. That is better for the club and for everyone.”
