His main contribution to the scoreboard came with a fine cross-field kick into the Harlequins’ 22 in the fourth minute to stretch the defence and Alex Dumoulin carried in the openng score.
Sexton scored the first of his two conversions from that try. His second also came from a difficult angle (this time on the left flank) after his fellow Lion and debutant, Dan Lydiate, claimed crossed the line on the back of a clinical maul.
‘Quins would go in level at 14-14 at the break however as each Racing score was followed up with a try to match from Ugo Monye and George Lowe.
Sexton never entered the field for the second period but did offer an update about his goldfish to pitchside reporter Jamie Noon.
As the game dis-jointed in the second half the opportunities came thick and fast and the Top 14 club showed their greater strength in depth to run up 40 points thanks in part to scores from Henry Chavancy and Jacques Cronje.
The French commentary team were so impressed they almost had to change head-bands at half time.
