THE PRESIDENT OF cycling’s governing body Pat McQuaid has had his nomination to stand for a third term declared void by Cycling Ireland.
McQuaid who has governed the UCI through a turbulent period of doping scandals was nominated by Cycling Ireland over two weeks ago.
However, with vice-president Anthony Moran resigning in protest after the vote, it proved a controversial one and the sport’s leading body in this country arranged an EGM to discuss the matter this weekend.
Today, Cycling Weekly report that the nomination has been wiped clear with a source telling the magazine that the move is down to “housekeeping, or where the rules for holding meetings may not have been rigidly adhered to.”
With the word ‘technicality’ echoing around Cycling Ireland it would appear that McQuaid may well be reinstated as their UCI Presidential nominee in the coming weeks. However, the move to declare the five-to-one vote void will no doubt be an unwanted headache for the embattled president.
This is turning into a bit of a farce now. I don’t think it is a good use of cabinet meeting time.
Rename the stadium Supervalu Pair UiCaoimh, problem solved. Now where is my minsterial pension.
@Joe O’Regan: mehole will sort ya
@Joe O’Regan: Well said. The Sportsground in Galway is also to be renamed Dexcom Park. There’s not a word about that and rightly so.
@Richard Ford: other than the article 3 below this one Rich is it?!
@Joe Kennedy: Through the chair a point of clarification Joe. There’s no controversy about the renaming of the Sportsground.
@Richard Ford: haha…..not yet anyway! Completely different situation in fairness though, given that the Sportsground isn’t currently named after any important historical rugby figure.
Supervalu Pairc UiCaoimh even.
