Hold on to your hats: Serena Williams named WTA player of the year

The American won Wimbledon, the US Open and Olympic gold after a successful comeback.

SERENA WILLIAMS HAS been named WTA Player of the Year after her most successful season since 2009.

The 31-year-old American the Wimbledon and US Open crowns to take her grand-slam haul in singles to 15 while she also won Olympic gold in women’s singles at London 2012.

She then teamed up with her sister, Venus, to win an Olympic gold in the doubles.

Williams ended the season ranked third overall in the world after a start-stop beginning to 2012.

She lost to Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round of the Australian Open and was ousted in the first round at the French Open by Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano.

Her season picked up after the disappointment in Paris and she stormed to a Wimbledon win followed by more Grand Slam success at Flushing Meadows.

Williams was virtually unstoppable from April to October when she won 48 of her 50 matches, culminating in the title at the WTA Championships in Istanbul.

The WTA accolade is her fourth, having also taken it in 2002, 2008 and 2009.

The award is voted for by international tennis media.
