One of sport's great upsets? Unseeded Italian ends Serena's calendar slam hopes

Who saw that coming?

THE ‘SERENA SLAM’ is over – but in the most unexpected fashion.

Unstoppable, untouchable and undefeatable throughout 2015, Serena Williams’ bid to win an unprededented calendar grand slam has ended with defeat to Roberta Vinci at the US Open.

For all the world it looked like the path had been cleared to lift her fourth grand slam of the year in New York on Sunday but she was stunned by the unseeded Italian at Flushing Meadows.

After winning the first set, Williams appeared to be in complete control of the semi-final but had no answer as Vinci hit back, winning the second and third sets 6-4, 6-4.

She will now face compatriot Flavia Pennetta in the final.

Vinci battled back to stun the three-time defending champion 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, ending Williams’ 33-match US Open win streak and 27-match Grand Slam win streak.

It will be the first all-Italian Grand Slam women’s final in the Open Era.

“I think she played out of her mind. I don’t think I played that bad. I think she just played really well,” said Williams.

Vinci was overjoyed by her shock win.

“It’s an incredible moment for me,” Vinci said. “It’s like a dream. I’m in the final. I beat Serena.

“It’s I think the best moment of my life.”

Vinci apologized to the crowd for ending Williams’ Grand Slam sweep dream.

“Sorry for the American people, for Serena, for the Grand Slam and everything. Today is my day. Sorry guys.”
