AFTER MONTHS IN the radio wilderness, the Second Captains team will be back on the airwaves with a new show on RTÉ Radio One called Second Captains Championship.

The quintet – who parted company with Newstalk in March 2013 - will take over the 6pm Sunday evening slot previously occupied by Take Your Point for the summer.

The show will be presented Eoin McDevitt along with Ciaran Murphy while Mark Horgan will continue to produce the programme which will air from June 22.

The other two members of the Second Captains crew, Simon Hick and Ken Early, will still be involved in the show with Hick helping with production duties and Early adding his unique perspective from time to time though his primary focus this summer will be the FIFA World Cup.

The move isn’t a huge surprise after filming two successful seasons of Second Captains Live for RTÉ television and many will welcome their return to radio.

Speaking to TheScore.ie Horgan said he was very excited about the return to radio.

“We’re delighted to be back on the radio. It seems like a perfect addition to what we’re doing at the moment [four podcasts per week as well as the Second Captains television show].

“I think it’s important in the current media landscape to be multi-platform as much as possible so adding live radio to what we’re doing is great.

“The one thing we’ve missed [since leaving Newstalk] is the immediacy you get with live radio and the interaction with listeners so it’ll be great to get that back.”

In a statement announcing the move today, Head of RTÉ Radio 1, Tom McGuire said: “Building on the great success of Sunday Sport, this new show follows in the footsteps of Sportscall and Take Your Point and will give victorious and vanquished fans alike a chance to offer their views on the race for Sam and Liam.

While Horgan confirmed that listener interaction will play an important part of the new show, it won’t be just through the traditional phone-in model.

“It’ll very much have a Second Captains feel to it and take the style of an American sports-radio show with lots of expert voices mixed with calls, texts and tweets from the listeners.

“Hopefully it’ll be a lot of fun.”

Great decision to bring him back. Who, since he was omitted from the team, has been able to control the play, give decent passes out wide/slide the ball through for the strikers? He’s head and shoulders above any midfielder we’ve had lately. Another instance of how poor trap was

As a Irish man and Forest supporter, I did a shameless celebratory dance when I heard of Andy’s inclusion in Noel King’s squad. His form has been outstanding and he has worked so so hard in the last 12-18 months. His popularity at Forest and in Nottingham in general is at an all time high – I haven’t seen a guy this much loved by supporters since the days of Stuart Pearce.

He is the most down to earth guy one can meet. Himself and Shane Long should get together on the auld guitar and write a parody song of Trap. Here’s to watching an Irish team actually play some football!
