Impressive World Cup silver medal for Irish Olympic duo Seaton and McGovern

IRISH SAILING IS enjoying another red letter day as it celebrates a silver medal for the 49ers event at the ISAF French World Cup.

Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern, who represented Ireland at London 2012, put together an impressive final day’s racing at the prestigious event, in Hyeres, to claim the silver. They recorded results of second, third and seventh in the final three races to finish second overall.

Seaton and McGovern’s achievement came after they got the better of all but one of their 80 competitors. They finished just behind the New Zealand team of Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. The Kiwis add the World Cup triumph to their silver at London 2012 and last year’s World Championship win.

The Irishmen finished ahead of the Australian duo of Iain Jensen and Nathan Outteridge, who were gold medallists at London 2012. Seaton commented, “We knew we could do it, we just had to get good starts and sail well. We have been consistent all week and that gave us confidence going in to today.”

McGovern added, “It feels absolutely amazing. Probably still waiting for it to sink in a little. It’s been a great day with three really tight races and all to play for.”

Annalise Murphy was also involved today, finishing seventh overall in the Laser Radial event.
