A former Ireland U21 international, Thornton spent three seasons with the Black Cats between 2002-05, when he helped them win promotion back to the Premier League.
Since then, the 31-year-old’s career has taken him to Blackpool, Doncaster Rovers, Leyton Orient, Shrewsbury Town, Aberstwyth Town, Conwy Borough and, most recently, Bala Town in the Welsh Premier League.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do having spent nearly 16 years in the UK,” Thornton said of his move to the SSE Airtricity League.
I’m a local lad who wanted to play for his local town and I’m delighted that the deal is done. It was an easy decision and I had no interest in going anywhere else when I came home.
“I’ve no individual goals for next season as the main aim will be to do well as a group. Obviously, Drogheda didn’t have the best of seasons last year so with a new manager in; I think things should be looking up this year. Cup competitions will be a big incentive for us as well.”
Sean Brennan has also returned to the club having spent the last two seasons with Shelbourne and Athlone Town.
