Ex-Arsenal star O'Leary believes Coleman 'absolutely spot on for Manchester United'

The former Arsenal legend is an admirer of the Republic of Ireland captain.

SEAMUS COLEMAN IS the perfect player for Manchester United, according to former Arsenal star David Oโ€™Leary.

Oโ€™Leary believes that Coleman is among the best full backs in Europe and said that he could not believe the player was not signed by United during David Moyesโ€™ tenure.

The former Sligo Rovers defender has become a mainstay at Goodison Park under three different managers and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford on a number of occasions.

An admirer of the 28-year-old, Oโ€™Leary revealed that he even attempted to convince his former club Arsenal to take a chance on Coleman a number of years ago, but noted that the emergence of Hector Bellerin scuppered any such move.

โ€œSeamus Coleman has been as good a full-back as anyone for a long, long time,โ€ Oโ€™Leary told Game On on RTE 2FM.

โ€œI was trying to push him Arsenalโ€™s way but we had a young lad coming through, [Hector] Bellerin.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe a few years ago, particularly when Fergie went, Man United [didnโ€™t sign him]. I thought he was absolutely spot on for Manchester United, the way they want to play, the way the lad plays.

โ€œThereโ€™s not many in Europe better than him in my opinion.โ€

Coleman scored in Evertonโ€™s 2-1 win over Arsenal on Tuesday, bringing his tally for the season to three goals in 13 league appearances.

Unfortunately for Cork City and Damien Delaney it wasnโ€™t the happiest of times. Shouldnโ€™t distract though from what was an excellent career across the water. Perhaps should have got more international caps

@Diarmuid: not sure I would call it unhappy. Damon really enjoyed his time at the club and was a massive influence off the pitch for a lot of the younger guys, something we will see the benefit Of in years to come.

@Leo Erah: true Leo hopefully his professionalism will have helped the younger lads. What I meant though was the on pitch performances. Which werenโ€™t the what he would have hoped for Iโ€™m sure

He was an excellent player. But his legs had gone. Itโ€™s a shame he didnโ€™t have more caps.
