Breakthrough: Seadna Morey awarded after Clare's under-21 success

The Banner’s inspirational half back has been announced as Bord Gais’ breakthrough talent of 2012.

CLARE HALF BACK Seadna Morey was last night announced as Bord Gais Energy’s breakthrough player of the year.

The inspirational ‘number seven’ was chosen from a short-list of six which included Kilkenny’s All Ireland final goalscorer Walter Walsh.

Also nominated for the gong were Morey’s Clare team-mates; Patrick O’Connor and Tony Kelly, John O’Dwyer of Tipperary and Ger Aylward of Kilkenny.

It was the Cats who provided the stage for Morey to shine, as he led the Banner to only their second under-21 All Ireland title.

Speaking as Morey was announced the winner, GAA president Liam O’Neill said:

“Having followed his progress throughout what was a fantastic competition, I can’t say I am surprised and I wish him well ahead of what should be a hugely exciting career in the Clare and Sixmilebridge colours.”

While Bord Gáis Energy Sports Ambassador and Cork selector Ger Cunningham said that Morey:

“displayed all the characteristics of a quality back in the Munster Semi-Final and Final but was also able to chip in with a score or two when needed. However, in the All-Ireland Semi-Final and Final we all felt that he brought his play to another level and, for this level of consistency, it was hard to ignore Seadna.”

Alongside Cunningham on the judging panel were Micheál Ó Dómhnaill of TG4, Waterford’s Ken McGrath and Galway’s Joe Canning.
