A CLUTCH DROP-GOAL from Scotland out-half Duncan Weir settled what turned out to be a thrilling Six Nations clash between strugglers Italy and Scotland in Rome.
The visitors appears to be on their way to a third defeat of 2014 after Tommaso Allen ( a former Scotland under 20 international) had taken a Sergio Parisse pass before sneaking over for a try on the stroke of half-time.
13 -3 down going into the second half, Italy began to settle on their lead and Greig Laidlaw managed to double his side’s tally to six points before the breakthrough finally came.
After two try-less defeats, the sight of Alex Dunbar breaking in midfield and accelerating all the way to the line was a massive fillip to the beleaguered coach, Scott Johnson.
Dunbar would find another massive gap in the Azzuri (dressed in white on this occasion) defence and jinked his way under the posts to give his side a 5-point lead with 13 minutes to go.
There was still time for more twists, however, Josh Furno getting over in the corner as the Roman crowd roared on their side to give Luciano Orquera the opportunity to give the advantage back to Jacques Brunel’s side.
Scotland had eight minutes to respond. And they were patient in their build-up with forwards making straightforward carries in a series of phases before eventually, they let their fate rest with the boot of 22-year-old Weir… he didn’t hold back.

George Hook has his good dickie-bow out for the big match. Seriously.
