Scarlets pull clear of Connacht in race for Champions Cup qualification

Rhys Priestland kicked 11 points on his last home appearance for Scarlets.

SCARLETS EDGED ONE step closer to automatic qualification for next season’s Champions Cup with a vital win in today’s Pro12 derby.

The Welsh region kicked off today just outside the top six places, but as they were level on points with Connacht, knew that two wins would earn them safe passage for next season’s European Cup.

Three penalties from Rhys Priestland to one from Cardiff starlet Rhys Patchell gave the hosts in Llanelli a commanding 9 – 3 lead at half-time.

Patchell doubled his side’s tally immediately after the break, but Ken Owens’ converted try on 65 minutes put the result beyond doubt.

The win pushes Scarlets into sixth place, four points clear of Connacht in seventh before next weekend’s final round of games where the western province host league leaders Ospreys while Scarlets travel to Treviso.
