Saw that coming: Balotelli charged with violent conduct

The Manchester City striker appeared to stamp on Scott Parker during his side’s Premier League clash with Spurs at the weekend.

THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION has charged controversial Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli with violent conduct after reviewing footage of his collision with Spurs midfielder Scott Parker at Eastlands yesterday.

Balotelli appeared to stamp on Parker after dispatching a shot on goal, an action that, if spotted by the referee, would likely have earned a straight red card.

This latest offence is the Italian’s second of the season, making a four-game ban the most likely punishment.

The FA has, however, declined the opportunity to charge Manchester City defender Jolean Lescott, who collided with Younes Kaboul in similar circumstances during the same match.

It’s a decision that has led many to question the FA’s transparency. Speaking to the BBC, former Premier League referee Graham Poll decribed FA policy as “inconsistent,” saying:

“What’s the matter with transparency? Balotelli is certain in my mind to get a four-match ban whereas Jolean Lescott is free to play.

“I do not believe there is a bias in the FA, but I do believe there’s inconsistency.”

The Italian has until 6pm on Wednesday to appeal the charge, a decision that risks a more severe punishment should the challenge prove unsuccessful.
