Ireland's Sanita Puspure has officially qualified for the Rio Olympics

It will be the second time the Latvia-born athlete has represented Ireland at the Olympics.

IRISH ROWER SANITA Puspure has officially qualified for the Rio Olympics, it has been confirmed.

The 34-year-old came second in the final of the Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne in Switzerland today with a time of 7:24.76, having needed to finish in the top four to seal her place in Brazil.

It will be the second time the Latvia-born athlete has represented Ireland at the Olympics — after gaining Irish nationality in 2011, she subsequently qualified for the London 2012 Games.

Puspure finished behind New Zealand’s Emma Twigg, while Belarus’ Ekaterina Karsten and Denmark’s Fie Udby Erichsen also qualified in third and fourth place respectively.

She is the third Irish boat to be confirmed for a place in Rio, with Lightweight Women’s Double Scull duo Sinead Jennings and Claire Lambe as well as Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls pair Gary and Paul O’Donovan previously qualifying.
