San Francisco to host Super Bowl L

The L stands for 50, you know.

SUPER BOWL L will take place in San Francisco, it was announced today.

The 32 owners of NFL franchises held a vote to determine the location of the 50th edition of the American football showpiece before deciding on the Levi’s Stadium, the future home of the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco was selected over Miami as the city of choice for the 2016 match and this means the Super Bowl is set to return to the Bay Area for the first time since 1985, when the 49ers beat the Miami Dolphins by a score of 38-16 at Stanford Stadium.

Speaking to the 49ers’ official website shortly after the announcement, the franchise’s chief executive Jed York said the award represented a “culmination of hard work from a number of dedicated individuals”.

“Our bid committee should be commended for putting together a proposal for NFL ownership that accurately depicted how memorable a Bay Area Super Bowl will be,” he added.

Gideon Yu, 49ers president, added: “The vision of a Bay Area Super Bowl is now a reality. I am extremely proud to be working alongside such great leaders in our community on this bid.”

It was also confirmed that the owners had voted in favour of Houston’s Reliant Stadium hosting Super Bowl LI in 2017.
