Wales prop Samson Lee hit with five-week ban for this headbutt

The 21-year-old admitted to the act of foul play in last weekend’s clash with South Africa.

WALES PROP SAMSON Lee has been suspended for five weeks for a headbutt during the clash with South Africa last weekend.

The ban means the 21-year-old tighthead will miss the first three weekends of the Scarlets’ Pro12 campaign, as well as two pre-season fixtures.

IRB disciplinary officer Christopher Quinlan found Lee guilty of “striking an opponent with the head” when he reviewed the incident involving Springboks’ lock Flip van der Merwe.

With that action being contrary to Law 10.4(a), Quinlan deemed that the offence was worthy of a mid-range entry point of 10 weeks. However, Lee’s admission to foul play, his disciplinary record, age, experience and “genuine remorse” saw Quinlan reduce the sentence to five weeks.

The incident took place in the 45th minute of South Africa’s 31-30 victory, with van der Merwe subsequently forced to leave the field to have a wound underneath his left eyebrow attended to.
