TOP AMATEUR JOCKEY Sam Waley-Cohen showed off his reflexes in a gripping finish to yesterday’s Punchestown Gold Cup.

Stable star Long Run was neck and neck with Irish hope Sir Des Champs when Waley-Cohen lost his whip just after the second-last fence.

Without a sideways glance or missing a beat, the jockey instinctively stuck his hand out behind his back and caught the whip mid-air.

Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as Sir Des Champs held on to claim the €90,000 first prize by three-quarters of a length.
