Fears for Ireland's Sam Bennett after nasty crash threatens to end his Tour

The 25-year-old went to hospital after today’s opening stage.

IRELAND’S SAM BENNETT escaped without any fractures but faces an anxious wait to discover whether his Tour de France is over after the opening stage.

The 25-year-old was taken to hospital after crashing during the sprint finish of this afternoon’s stage from Mont Saint-Michel to Utah Beach in Normandy.

Bennett injured his spine and finger and x-rays showed he didn’t suffer a fracture but it remains to be seen whether he’ll take to the start line tomorrow morning.

The Bora-Argon 18 rider had put himself into contention after a strong ride but an unfortunate crash may yet end his Tour.

One of the Tour favourites, Alberto Contador, suffered cuts and bruising on his entire right side after crashing halfway though the stage.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s other participant, Dan Martin, finished the stage in 54th.
