Facts and figures: the 2012 Ryder Cup in numbers

Roll up, stats lovers. We’ve got all the nerdy numbers that matter this weekend in Medinah.

1 – Europe’s winning margin in the last Ryder Cup, a 14.5-13.5 win in 2010 at a rain-hit Celtic Manor.

2 - Drawn matches in Ryder Cup history. The United States retained the trophy following a 16-16 draw at Royal Birkdale in 1969 while Europe retained it following a 14-14 draw at the Belfry 20 years later in 1989.

3 - Belly putters on display in Medinah this week — Keegan Bradley, Matt Kuchar and Webb Simpson.

4 - Captain’s picks in Davis Love III’s team: Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker and Dustin Johnson. Jose Maria Olazabal only had two and selected Nicolas Colsaerts and Ian Poulter.

5 – Rookies playing in their first Ryder Cup match: four Americans (Bradley, Snedeker, Simpson and Jason Dufner) and one European (Colsaerts).

8 - Different countries represented in the 2012 European team: four from England, two each from Spain and Northern Ireland, and one apiece from Scotland, Italy, Sweden, Germany and Belgium.

9 - 2012 will be Phil Mickelson’s ninth Ryder Cup appearance, the most of any player at Medinah.

11 - Nick Faldo made a record 11 Ryder Cup appearances, winning a total of 25 points.

13 - America won the Ryder Cup for a record 13 consecutive matches between 1959 and 1983 — 12 wins and a draw in 1969.

19 - Years and 258 days, Sergio Garcia’s age when he became the youngest ever player in the match at Brookline in 1999. At 23, Rory McIlroy is the youngest on either side in 2012.

20 - Of the 24 players selected for Medinah have won on either the European or PGA Tour this season. Three Europeans (Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Martin Kaymer) are winless as is America’s Jim Furyk.

28 - The total points available, split between eight fourball matches, eight foursomes and 12 singles.

39 - 2012 is the 39th Ryder Cup match.

45 - The length in feet of Justin Leonard’s famous putt to win a half against Jose Maria Olazabal in 1999.

51 - Years and 20 days, Raymond Floyd’s age in 1993 when he became the oldest Ryder Cup player. At 45, Steve Stricker is the oldest in 2012.

72 - Par at the Medinah Country Club.

872 – The total number of matches that have been played since the Ryder Cup began.

1927 - The first Ryder Cup between the United States and Great Britain took place at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts. The US won by 9.5-2.5.

1979 – The first match that Europe played in. Prior to that, the United States had faced Great Britain (1927-1971) or Great Britain & Ireland (1973-77).

7,657 – The total distance, in yards, of the Medinah course.

1,500,000 - The cost, in $, of Medinah’s extensive greens renovation project ahead of the 2012 match.
