DEIRDRE RYAN IS out of the Olympics after she was failed to qualify for the women’s high jump final.
The 30-year-old was listed in Group A of the heats this morning and knew that 1.96m would earn automatic progression to Saturday’s event.
Clearing 1.80m in her first jump, the Dubliner then made 1.85m on her second attempt at it but couldn’t successfully get over 1.90m after three tries.
Ryan, who holds the Irish record at 1.95m, told The Score: “I had two good attempts at 1.90 – the first and the third – but my second attempt I was too far away and had to move the mark forward.
“I was struggling technically. The legs felt good today but the rhythm was off and so was the timing. On the third attempt, I parallel planted and travelled across the bar too much.
“On the first, I just clipped it with my heels.
“I had hoped to come into the championships but I’ve struggled with my technical issues all season.
Unfortunately it wasn’t to be despite all the support from home and the fantastic crowd out there. I’m just sorry I couldn’t respond with a big jump.”
Ryan, who moved to Germany five years ago, added that she intends to continue jumping but that she would like to move home to Ireland.
The Roscommon SHF was also on today…..
