Ryan to succeed Eamon O’Shea in Tipp hurling hotseat next year

Eamon O’Shea will take charge of the Premier County hurlers for one more season.

MICHAEL RYAN WILL succeed Eamon O’Shea as Tipperary senior hurling team manager next year.

A recommendation that Ryan make the step up from assistant manager after the conclusion of the 2015 season will go before a full county board meeting on Wednesday evening.

In recent negotiations with Premier County top brass, O’Shea stressed the need to groom a successor, before he agreed to take up the option of a third, and final, year in charge.

Ryan, an All-Ireland SHC medallist in 1991, was a selector alongside coach O’Shea and manager Liam Sheedy when Tipperary won their last All-Ireland senior hurling title in 2010.

And the Upperchurch-Drombane clubman has been a key member of O’Shea’s backroom team for the last two seasons, following his appointment in October 2012.

The news that Ryan will step into the manager’s hot-seat means that the 2015 campaign will be O’Shea’s last at the helm.

In another significant development, it has been revealed that 2010 All-Ireland winner Declan Fanning will come on board as an additional selector next season.

Fanning, 35, was right-half-back on the team that stormed to Liam MacCarthy Cup glory, before announcing his retirement from intercounty hurling soon after.

Chairman Sean Nugent revealed in a statement last night: “Tipperary county board wish to confirm that Eamon O’Shea will remain as Tipperary senior hurling team manager for 2015, and complete his two-year term of office as approved by Tipperary county board at the 2013 October county board meeting.

“Michael Ryan, assistant manager, and Paudie O’Neill, coach, will remain as his selectors while the name of Declan Fanning as an additional selector will go before next Wednesday’s county board meeting for approval.

“A recommendation that Michael Ryan will succeed Eamon O’Shea as Tipperary senior hurling manager after the conclusion of the 2015 season will also go before Wednesday next’s county board meeting for approval.”

The news that Ryan will take over from O’Shea should be warmly welcomed by players, supporters and officials alike as it provides continuity in the Tipperary set-up after the current manager steps down next year.
