Reeling in the Giggs: What was happening when the Welsh wizard made his Manchester United debut

The fact The Simpsons were top of the charts tells you just how long ago it was.

IT’S ONE OF those strange quirks of fate that, if Ryan Giggs had made his 1,000th career appearance today, it would have come exactly 22 years on from his Manchester United debut.

The day was Saturday, 2 March 1991.

A Manchester United side containing the likes of Les Sealey,  Darren Ferguson and Mal Donaghy were trailing 2-0 to Everton in Old Trafford.

Some skinny Welsh kid, fresh of face and baggy of jersey, came of off the bench to replace the injured Denis Irwin.

Since then Ryan Giggs has gone on to make 93o more appearances for United, 64 for Wales and also won four caps as captain of Great Britain during last Summer’s London Olympics.

The world has changed a lot since Giggs came off the bench that day, but what was it like on that day?

Sadly, despite all the hype during the week, Alex Ferguson has deemed Giggs surplus to requirements today. Much like the football world did with incredibly short shorts a long time ago.

What about you, what were you doing in March 1991?
