RTE to broadcast live women's rugby game for first time as Ireland eye Grand Slam

The unbeaten Irish women face Italy in Rome on Sunday.

THE NATION WILL have the chance to watch Ireland’s women rugby stars bid for an historic Grand Slam title this weekend.

RTE have announced that they will broadcast the crucial 6 Nations game with Italy in Milan. It will be the first time the state broadcaster has shown a live women’s rugby game.

Joanne Cantwell will present coverage from 1.45pm on Sunday with Ryle Nugent and former international Rosie Foley providing commentary from Italy.

“This is a significant investment by RTÉ in the women’s game,” said Nugent today, “and we are delighted to be able to bring the match to Irish audiences across all our platforms. The team’s achievements in the Championship this year have been phenomenal and we wish them the best of luck in Sunday’s game.”

Ireland already have the championship sown up but hope to clinch a first Grand Slam with defeat of the Azzurri on St Patrick’s Day.

Ireland and UL full back, Niamh Briggs, tweeted her delight at the decision this evening. “Oh my God, brill news RTE are showing our match live on Sunday #wowser.”
