13 sides to pick from but who was the best?

THERE WAS PLENTY of success for Irish teams over the past 12 months and picking the winner of RTÉ’s Team of the Year will provide plenty of debate.

RTÉ have selected 13 nominees and the public will get to pick their favourite team of 2015 when RTÉ opens the vote on Saturday night.

Among the teams nominated are All-Ireland winners Dublin and Kilkenny as well as the Cork camogie and Ladies football team.

Dundalk receive recognition after they won their second successive SSE Airtricity League title, as they completed the league and cup double. The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland soccer teams also pick up a nomination after they secured qualification for Euro 2016.

Despite a disappointing World Cup performance, there is a nomination for the Irish rugby team after they successfully retained their Six Nations title. Their female counterparts also get a nomination after they also lifted the Six Nations crown.

The Irish boxing team were nominated after winning 10 medals this year, including a gold medal for Michael Conlon at the World Championships.

They can look forward to an exciting 2016 with Rio on the horizon, as can the Irish Men’s hockey team as they became the first Irish hockey team to qualify since 1908.

Also on the list of nominations are Special Olympics Team Ireland, after they won 26 gold medals in Los Angeles.

The final team on the list is the Irish Women’s cricket team who qualified for the T20 World Cup in India next year.
